Are Practitioners Getting the Career Support They Need?
Career support and development are more crucial than ever nowadays – but are practitioners getting the help they need from associations and societies? The 3rd Wiley Practitioner Society Member Survey, released at the end of 2021, shed new light on this question, examining in detail how practitioners view association career support services and more. Here, we take an in-depth look at U.S.-based practitioners and their views on the spectrum of career support services offered by associations and societies, as well as exploring some important takeaways and action points for associations based on the data.
Engagement with Association Career and Learning Services
The survey results demonstrated the importance of association career and learning services.
When asked about their usage of association career and education services, 41% of U.S. practitioners attended an educational program such as a CME course, while another 30% leveraged their association’s certification program. Smaller numbers of practitioners also participated in a mentoring program sponsored by their association, attended a networking event or used an association’s career services program. Notably, although career services were relatively underused, it’s still regarded as very important for associations and societies to offer them. Across the survey as a whole, 32% of respondents said it was helpful to access career development resources and 52% said it was important for their association to provide a career services option. The results show that participation in a young professionals program was low, although this could be explained by the fact that U.S. survey respondents tend to skew toward the older and more experienced end of the career spectrum.

Certification and Credentialing Services
Practitioners view the certification and credentialing services offered by associations as crucial to their career support and development.
Half of respondents said such services were either very important or important to them, while 25% held a neutral view toward them. The other 25%, however, said certification and credentialing services weren't important at all.

Satisfaction with Association Career Support
Practitioners, in general, experienced mixed satisfaction with the career support services that associations have to offer.
When asked to rate their satisfaction with their association’s career support services on a scale of 0 to 5, with a score below 3.5 indicating a lack of satisfaction, respondents expressed being relatively pleased with the certification and credentialing services offered by associations.
Career development support was barely positive among practitioners surveyed, while career promotion support, notably, was below the minimum threshold for satisfaction.

Finding T heir Current Role
Associations and societies continue to play a key role in helping practitioners find jobs.
According to the survey, while other means of finding a job comprised the bulk of how practitioners found work, 15% leveraged society related contacts and networking and 13% said online job boards helped them find their current role. Only 4% used society career support services, yet as mentioned earlier, 52% said that it was important for their society to provide career services. There seems to be a clear gap here that associations can fill.

• Associations should consider investing more in their mentoring, networking and career services programs to boost member engagement.
• Credentialing and certification services remain very popular among members, who rate them as among the most important services offered.
